Churches of the South Park Blocks and More…

Notable Churches in Portland’s Living Room

The South Park Blocks are often referred to as Portland’s “Living Room” and the city’s “Cultural District”. The Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Historical Society are all well known landmarks surrounding this iconic public space. The South Park Blocks and vicinity are also the home to several of the most notable late 19th and early 20th century churches in Portland.

On this tour we’ll visit up to nine of these fine buildings with a chance to view several interiors. We’ll also see some of the stained glass designs by the legendary Povey Brothers Glass company. Changes in church-going habits have impacted these faith communities, and we’ll learn how many congregations have adapted to these changes.

We will view nine churches and visit the interior of several of the buildings, including the Carpenter Gothic Old Church (1883), the oldest church on the tour. (see above)
