Historic Goose Hollow Walking Tour

From Plank Road to Lewis and Clark Expo

This neighborhood was the site of the historic Plank Road, a transportation initiative that gave Portland an edge over competing communities in the region. Goose Hollow likely got its name from the days when newly arrived immigrants kept livestock in this historic corner of Old Portland.

We owe our eccentric former mayor, Bud Clark, a debt of gratitude for reviving the name of this obscure neighborhood from its earlier time in Portland history.

In the years after the Lewis and Clark Expo this area experienced a development boom that is evident in the remaining prominent buildings. We’ll share some history about the development of the neighborhood and then head out to explore some of the historic landmarks in Goose Hollow including:

  • Zion Lutheran Church (1950) – designed by Pietro Belluschi
  • Mallory Hotel (1912) – now the Hotel DeLuxe/Gracie’s Dining Room
  • Scottish Rite Masonic Center (1906) – Neo-Classical architectural gem (see photo above)
  • Neighbors of Woodcraft Building (1928)/Tiffany Center – Art Deco landmark
  • Providence Park – Home of the Portland Timbers/Thorns soccer
