Historic Hollywood District Walking Tour

Exploring This Well-Known Diagonal Arterial

Starting at the iconic Hollywood Theatre we’ll head northeast along Sandy Blvd, exploring the built environment along this well-known diagonal arterial. Most of the commercial buildings reflect the eclectic stylistic palette of architects and builders of the “between the Wars” period.

We’ll learn how the automobile transformed this neighborhood into a place where mid-century Portland teens went “cruising for burgers.” It is also where city residents came to experience “ethnic food”.

We will explore the residential area north of Hollywood looking for fine examples of Craftsman, Period Revival and even some Mid-Century Modern residences. We’ll walk past one of the most visible of Portland’s high school buildings. We will return to Sandy Blvd at the end of the tour.
